I’m currently reworking some of the back-end code of this site, and rather enjoying it. This was the first Rails project I ever did; I learned Rails by converting this site from PHP. Coming back to the code after months engaged with other projects (I’ve been using Rails at work ever since) I’m surprised by how maintainable the thing is. Everything’s still easy to find and makes sense. There are some rough edges caused by a beginner’s ignorance here and there, but mostly I’m not changing much.
I may have said it before, but I’ll restate it here: I built the PHP version of this site from scratch in a month, working all day almost every day. The Rails version, with no prior experience of Rails or Ruby, took a month of after-work evenings. If you make websites, you have to try this thing.
